Celtic are closing in on Aaron Mooy with the free agent midfielder keen on a return to Scotland for family reasons.

The Bhoys have enjoyed a positive window with loanees Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers joining Daizen Maeda in signing permanently.

Benjamin Siegrist and Alexandro Bernabei are Celtic’s new faces but Ange Postecoglou remains in the market for new additions.

A midfielder has been a priority since Nir Bitton and Tom Rogic left this summer and it looks like Postecoglou has landed his man.

Reports broke on Sunday night suggesting that Celtic were on the verge of a deal to sign midfielder Aaron Mooy.

The Scottish Sun report that Mooy is set to join Celtic on a free transfer having left Chinese side Shanghai Port.

It’s stated that Mooy has been chasing a return to Scotland in order to be with his Scottish wife and family.

Mooy met wife Nicola during his time as a St Mirren player but the Australian had to leave her behind to make the move to China in 2020.

Mooy set his sights on heading back to Scotland to be back with his family and a move to Celtic just made too much sense.

Postecoglou coached Mooy in the Australian national team setup and reuniting is just perfect for all parties.

The 31-year-old earned big money in China but is now ready for a move to Celtic some 10 years since last playing in Scotland.

Mooy was outstanding at Huddersfield Town between 2016 and 2019 and after impressing for Brighton, the midfielder bagged six goals and three assists in 31 outings for Shanghai Port.

Just last week, Postecoglou called Mooy a ‘fantastic’ player but suggested that Celtic wouldn’t be signing him.

That seems to have been a case of classic misdirection though as Celtic are now closing in on an exciting deal for the technically-gifted Mooy, who just fits perfectly into Postecoglou’s approach.
