The Mission to Seafarers (MTS) says it would partner with Nigerian Maritime Law Association (NMLA) to protect its members who are victimised on board vessels. The partnership, MTS said, would also bail seafarers who may be arrested and victimised in Nigeria over infractions or crimes committed by their ship owners. Chairman, Management Committee, MTS, Lagos, Adebayo Babatunde Sarumi, made this known during the 2022 Annual Sea Sunday Service held at “Our Saviours Church”, TBS, Lagos. Sarumi said the partnership is part of an enhanced effort to demonstrate gratitude to seafarers for their invaluable contributions to global trade. The former Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), also said the MTS, Lagos, would significantly improve the Seafarers’ Centre in Apapa. He indicated that MTS’ partnership with NMLA to provide legal representation became imperative now that rising global statistics show that many vessels are getting arrested and seafarers are increasingly detained over crimes or offences by owners of vessels. Sarumi stressed the need for more stakeholders’ partnership for a vibrant MTS centre, equipped with modern facilities and the requisite personnel to attend to seafarers. He noted that, “The seafarer is a worker that the world is yet to truly understand. “These are workers who carry everything imported, that citizens of any nation utilise. “When we were younger, the Seafarers’ Centre in Apapa was a beehive of activities. “When seafarers come to Lagos ports, we bring them to that Apapa Centre to care for them. “After spending 6 -10 weeks on the waters, when seafarers come to the shores of a nation that is not their home, it’s only befitting that they have a place where they are cared for psychologically, spiritually and physically. “There is no better place to go than an establishment set up by a Christian organisation which is what MTS stands for,” Sarumi said. He encouraged the church and other well-meaning Nigerians to collaborate with MTS Lagos to make seafarers that come to the nation’s shores realise that the work they put in is truly appreciated.
Following the incessant boat mishaps along Lagos waterways that have claimed lives of passengers, the Management of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) says it will sanction any boat driver plying without lifejackets in the State. Manager, NIWA, Lagos Area, Engineer Sarat Braimah, disclosed this to ewsmen shortly after the authority arrested a boat driver with passengers plying without life vests. He said, “the culprit will be dealt with as a deterrent to others who flout waterways rules and guidelines”. Braimah said the driver was arrested alongside six passengers without life jackets along the Lagos waterways. The authority said the impounded boat and driver were moving at top speed with passengers without life vests before they got intercepted by a team of NIWA officials on tour. The NIWA boss said the team had gone to Ibeshe Town to sympathise with the community over the recent death of 19 members of the community who drowned around Mile 2 area while travelling home to celebrate the Eid-El Kabir festivity with their loved ones. Recall that two successive boat mishaps claimed the lives of 21 passengers recently along the Lagos waterways, raising fears among waterways users about the level of safety measures being enforced by regulatory agencies.
As a panacea to curbing rising cases of oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the country, the Management of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), says it would deploy two of its special mission aircrafts to combat oil theft and other criminalities. Director General (DG), NIMASA, Dr Bashir Jamoh, who disclosed this to newsmen at Abuja, said two special mission aircrafts in the Deep Blue Project fleet of the agency will be deployed to fight oil theft and protect the nation’s economy. He described oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and illegal refining as unlawful activities capable of threatening the economic and environmental well-being of the country. The Director said the aircrafts from the mobile assets of the Deep Blue Project will support existing platforms being deployed by other security agencies, which NIMASA has subsisting Memorandum of Understanding with. Jamoh explained that the aircrafts would assist in patrolling oil facilities, installations, and other assets to observe suspicious human and vessel movements in and around the facilities. ”We shall be deploying our two special mission aircrafts for aerial surveillance to prevent and fight oil theft in the country. “With this, we aim at using the aircraft to patrol sensitive areas, record suspicious human and vessel movements to process intelligence for timely action by our security agencies. “The oil industry is critical to our national economy and no space of the sector should be left for criminals to occupy or operate. “We have recorded gains in our maritime security efforts and more needs to be done to sustain and consolidate on these gains. “Our collaborations with security agencies, which we have MoUs with, are among other reasons, to collaborate and work ahead of criminal elements. “I am happy to state that our synergies have been beneficial to the country in many ways”, the NIMASA boss stated.
