Dramatic footage shows a car fire on a residential street the Derby that closed it to traffic this afternoon. Two cars were alight on Hampden Street, in Normanton, with flames spreading to a garden where a shed was gutted by the fire and a conservatory badly damaged.

Images from the scene show the remnants two cars completely burnt out while other cars across the road, including a taxi, have sustained fire damage due to the heat from the nearby blaze. The fire has caused tens of thousands of pounds' worth of damage.

Derbyshire Live understands that the two vehicles destroyed were a Nissan Juke and BMW X1 and that nobody was hurt in the fire. The driver of the BMW was alerted to the fire beneath their car by a quick-thinking pedestrian who noticed the flames emerging from the chassis.

The BMW was owned by Pavel Pacaj who had only owned the vehicle for four months. Family member Marek Pacaj said: “He (Pavel) was coming home from getting the car serviced and there was a fire underneath the car, which he didn’t realise.

"Someone saw it, ran up to him and said the car is on fire, and so he got out. If no one told him, he would have still been in the car.”

Pavel told Derbyshire Live that he had taken the car to a garage after he noticed the service light was on. He has claimed that he had no issues with the car up until this point.

Pavel apparently parked the car and ran before the flames spread to the Nissan Juke and nearby garden which has been significantly damaged by the blaze. The road has been closed off and police were at the scene as of 2.30pm and it is understood that there have been no injuries either to drivers or people at the adjacent property.

Danny Hadley, who lives opposite the damaged property, said: “I was asleep at the time and my partner said there is something going on. She went out and called the fire brigade. I heard people shouting.”

Tasha Smith, Danny’s partner, said: “I just thought ‘what on earth is going on?’ I even came outside. We were told to get out of the house, then there was a massive bang and the fire spread all up onto the bushes.

"It’s burned my bins. It’s just lucky that it was not on my side, it would have gone straight into the house. I thought something was burning in my house at first. It was quite scary.”

Danny added that the resident was in bed when the fire started. The owner of the Nissan Juke told me that he had bought it for £20,000 just two months ago and now needs to find a way to get to Manchester Airport on Saturday for his holiday.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue tweeted: "We have three fire crews dealing with a vehicle and property #fire on Hampden Street in #Normanton The fire is now out & crews are damping down". According to the tweet crews from Nottingham Road in Chaddesden, Long Eaton and Ascot Drive in Allenton.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue confirmed that three fire crews attended the scene after a call at 12:26pm today, Thursday, June 23. Derbyshire Live understands that the fire was brought under control by around 3pm although the road surface appears to be damaged.
